Steel pivot doors – what are they and when do you choose them?
A steel pivot door rotates on a pivot system that is mounted in the floor and ceiling. This creates a sleek, minimalist effect with a modern look. Pivot doors are popular in contemporary interiors because they connect spaces without blocking light: steel and glass provide openness, while the door still brings structure and calm. Many people choose a pivot door between the kitchen and living room, in the entrance, or to an office, precisely because it is a real eye-catcher and practical to use.
At Maison Acier, you can design your pivot door in various styles, with a choice of color and glass - and additional options upon request.
What is a pivot door?
A pivot door rotates around a vertical axis (the “pivot point”), instead of on traditional side hinges. This pivot point is not located in the door frame but is supported by a pivot system in the floor and ceiling. This gives you a sleek, minimalist look: no visible hinges on the side and a very “architectural” effect.
What makes a pivot door different to use?
- It opens smoothly and often feels more “luxurious” than a standard interior door.
- It can usually open in two directions: inwards and outwards (depending on the system and configuration).
Pivot door vs. hinged door: what's the difference?
Are you torn between a pivot door and a hinged door? The main differences lie in appearance, opening direction, and sense of space.
Pivot Door
- Pivot point in floor/ceiling
- Often opens in two directions (in/out)
- Very minimalist and modern
- Creates an open, airy feel
Hinged Door (classic interior door, also known as a frame door)
- Hinges on one side
- Opens in one direction (usually)
- Classic comfort, familiar operation
- Often finished with visible hinges/frame
Which do you choose and when?
- Choose a pivot door if you want to make a statement and your interior is sleek and modern (or if you want to make a passage extra "architectural").
- Choose a hinged door if you primarily want a classic operation, or when a fixed opening direction is important.
When is a pivot door the best choice?
A steel pivot door with glass is ideal when you want to connect spaces but still add structure. You maintain light and sightlines, while your home feels calmer and more "finished."
Typical situations where pivot doors work perfectly:
- Between kitchen and living room: you maintain the open living space but can visually define zones.
- Entrance/hallway to living space: an immediate strong first impression and extra light.
- Office or practice room: letting light through, but still a clear separation.
- Renovations with wide openings: a pivot door turns a large passage into a real design element.
Practical tip:
Do you often have your hands full (children, groceries)? Then a pivot door is nice because it opens smoothly and often returns controlled to its closed position.
Style choices: paneling, glass, and color
The advantage of a steel pivot door is that you can perfectly match its design to your interior. The most important choices are: panel division, glass, and colour.
Panel division (design & appearance)
- 2-panel / 3-panel: sleek and minimalist, fits into almost any modern interior.
- 4-panel / 5-panel / 6-panel: more rhythm and detail, often somewhat more classic or more "high-end" depending on the lines.
- Rounded lines or arch details: softer and more playful, ideal if your interior is warm-modern, Japandi, or eclectic.
- Asymmetric or with side window: extra architectural, gives a luxurious "bespoke" look.
Glass (light vs. privacy)
- Transparent glass: maximum light and openness.
- Frosted glass: more privacy, softer light (ideal for entrance, office, bathroom zone).
- Dark tinted glass: extra ambiance and luxurious appearance, slightly more privacy with a chic look.
Colour (match with your interior)
At Maison Acier, pivot doors are available in:
- Black (graphic, powerful, timeless)
- White (light, soft, minimalist)
- Bronze (warm, chic, hotel feel)
- Olive green (unique, stylish, trend-proof)
Other colours or combinations are available upon request.
Frequently asked questions about steel pivot doors (FAQ)
Usually yes: a pivot door is often designed to swing both inwards and outwards (depending on the chosen system and setup). But at Maison Acier, we opt for a hydraulic closing system. Atelier Acier pivot doors can always be opened from both sides.
Yes. With frosted glass or dark tinted glass, you maintain light, but increase privacy.
In small spaces, a simple layout (e.g. 2-panel or 3-panel) often feels the most open. When in doubt, choose transparent glass for extra spaciousness.
You can, of course, always contact us for advice or to discuss this.

In almost all cases, underfloor heating is not a problem. Our pivot system for doors is a surface-mounted system. This basically means that the majority of the hinge is integrated into the door. For the pivot system, we place two screws into the floor. For this, we only need to go 8 millimeters deep into the floor.
